  • Healthcare
  • East Kilbride, Scotland
  • Solar PV & Battery Storage
  • £11,056 estimated annual savings

Kilbryde Hospice provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care for people with life-limiting illnesses, alongside support for their families and carers.

With annual electricity consumption exceeding 200,000kWH, reducing energy costs was an important part of the hospice’s long term plans. Kilbryde Hospice wanted to make better use of renewable energy, reduce its reliance on grid electricity and protect its vital services against rising energy costs. Global Eco Energy Solutions were appointed to design and deliver a complete commercial solar PV and battery storage system.

The Challenge

Installing a large-scale renewable energy system is one thing. Installing it within a live hospice environment is another.

Kilbryde Hospice needed to remain fully operational throughout the project, with patients, visitors, clinical staff, volunteers and service providers on site every day. This meant the installation had to be carefully planned to minimise disruption while maintaining safe access around the building. Deliveries, working areas, scaffold operations and installation activities were coordinated closely with the hospice team, with particular care taken to protect vulnerable patients and maintain clear pedestrian and emergency access at all times.

The project also involved significant rooftop works and the installation of battery storage, requiring detailed planning and careful management of work at height, lifting operations and electrical works.

The Solution

Global Eco delivered a complete turnkey solar PV and battery storage installation, including system design, structural and electrical assessments, DNO application and approval, installation, testing, commissioning and certification.

The completed system comprises:

The battery allows surplus solar generation to be stored and used when it is needed, helping the hospice make better use of the energy generated on site. The entire installation was delivered within the live healthcare environment with careful coordination to keep disruption to patients, staff, visitors and day-to-day hospice services to a minimum.

The Result

The new solar & battery system is expected to generate approximately 40,750kWh of electricity each year, helping Kilbryde Hospice reduce the amount of electricity it needs to purchase from the grid.

Based on the project’s estimated figures, the installation is expected to deliver £11,056 estimated annual savings within an estimated 4.1 year payback period.

For a charitable organisation providing vital care and support, reducing ongoing energy costs can help protect resources for the services that matter most. The project also gives Kilbryde Hospice a long-term renewable energy solution, helping the organisation make better use of its own energy generation while reducing its reliance on grid electricity.
