2025: A Record Year for Small-Scale Renewables in the UK

Written by: Liam | Published: February 24, 2026

The UK’s transition to low-carbon energy continues to accelerate.

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) has confirmed that 2025 was a record year for small-scale renewable installations. A total of 369,000 certified systems were registered across solar PV, battery storage and heat pumps β€” representing a 34% increase on the previous record year.

What Do These Figures Actually Mean?

Collectively, these installations are estimated to generate 1.8 billion kWh of electricity. To put that into perspective, that’s enough energy to power the London Underground network for an entire year β€” or make 83 billion cups of tea.

Beyond the statistics, this growth reflects a clear shift in homeowner behaviour. More households are prioritising:

  • Energy independence
  • Protection against rising energy costs
  • Reduced carbon emissions

Renewables are no longer niche β€” they are becoming mainstream.

Why MCS Certification Matters

As an MCS-certified installer, we understand that quality and compliance are just as important as performance.

MCS certification ensures that renewable systems are installed to recognised industry standards. For customers, this provides reassurance that their system has been designed and installed safely, correctly, and in line with regulatory requirements β€” as well as eligibility for certain incentives and export tariffs.

Is Now the Right Time to Invest?

With record adoption rates and continued focus on decarbonisation, 2025 proved to be a pivotal year for the sector β€” and the momentum shows no signs of slowing in 2026.

The continued growth in solar PV, battery storage and heat pumps demonstrates increasing confidence in renewable technologies, both from homeowners and the wider industry.

If you’re considering solar panels, battery storage or a heat pump, understanding both the performance potential and installation standards is key to making the right decision.
